About Yoga & Yoga FAQ's
What is Yoga?
The word Yoga means “union” in Sanskrit.  Yoga is a scientific system of physical & mental practices.  Originating in India more than 6,000 years
ago, its purpose is to assist us in achieving our highest potential.  The root belief of yoga is that the body and breath are connected with the mind.
In our everyday lives, stress, tension, and the thoughts running through our minds cause the body to tighten up.  A tight body is an uncomfortable
body and years of tension in the body can manifest into many physical ailments and diseases.  In yoga we utilize the breath to heighten our focus
with our connection, “union”, of mind and body while moving through poses (asanas) which loosen and release areas of tension.

Can I do yoga if I am not very flexible?

improve digestion, circulation and insomnia.

Remove Your Shoes - Leave your shoes in the lobby.  Since people will be walking around the studio barefoot, it is most hygienic if everyone takes
off their outdoor shoes first thing.

Turn Off Your Cell Phone - Make a habit of doing this as soon as you get to the yoga studio.

Arrive On Time - Arrive at least 10 minutes before the class is scheduled to start.  If you do arrive late, wait to enter the studio until 10 minutes after
class has started.  Enter quietly and spend a few minutes seated on your mat, focusing on your breath before joining the movements of the class
around.

Can I Leave Class to use the Restroom? -  It is perfectly all right to leave class for a few minutes to go to the bathroom. There is no need to ask
the teacher's permission. The best time to go is when there is a period of rest, either in Child's Pose or Downward Dog.

Don't Skip Savasana (final relaxation) - Your final relaxation in Savasana is a very important part of your practice. Don't plan to leave class early. If
you must, tell the teacher in advance and take a short Savasana before you go.

Always inform your instructor of any injuries, illness, or acute discomfort prior to class. Yoga is very safe, but certain postures may aggravate
irritated parts of the body. Benefits come from the awareness with which you stretch, not how far you stretch. Respect your body and its capabilities.

Wear comfortable, yet fitted, clothing that allows free movement.  (clothes that are too baggy will get in the way of your yoga practice).

It is suggested to do yoga on an empty stomach (two hours after meals, one hour after any beverage). In yoga practice you will twist from side to
side, turn upside down, and bend forward and backward.  These movements will not be comfortable on a full stomach. If you are a person with a
fast-acting digestive system and are afraid you might get hungry or feel weak during yoga class, experiment with a light snack such as yogurt,
granola, or juice about 30 minutes to an hour before class.

Always work to your own level.  Move slowly and deliberately, and try not to compare yourself with others.  Yoga is a personal and internal process
and cannot be measured by strength, flexibility or anything else. Do not compete or compare!

Remember to breathe through the nostrils while practicing yoga, unless directed otherwise.
